Sans Wine Co. CANS 2-pk: Sparkling Rosé & Carbonic Carignan
Region: Poor Ranch Vineyard < Mendocino County < California
Grapes: Zinfandel & Carignan
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: CCOF certified organic, head-trained, dry-farmed 40+ year-old vineyards; vegan certified; canned unfined/unfiltered w/ minimal So2 (Rosé) and NO ADDED So2 (Carignan); both are 13% ABV
Winemakers: Gina Schober + Jake Stover
Delicious natural wine in a can? Hell yeah! First time winemakers, the newly married couple Gina and Jake, both wine industry vets, decided to go with cans for their inaugural project because they love the portability and sustainability of aluminum but could never find quality canned juice. And, as it turns out, the can is showing to be a potentially better package for natural wines. Because you use liquid nitrogen vs. nitrogen gas to maintain the necessary pressure in the can, resulting in zero oxygen interaction with the wine. No headspace or corked wine! Along with no UV penetration or oxygen exchange through a cork.
We're featuring two of our favorite Sans cans here, both of which you need for your summer beach/river/park outings – but beware, each can is half a bottle of wine, and they’re dangerously easy to chug…

2018 Sans Sparkling Rosé Poor Ranch Vineyard CAN 375ml
The Rosé Bubbles is a play on white Zinfandel, which Gina's family drank A LOT of in the 1980s and 1990s -- she says there was always a box of it in their fridge. To make this new sparkler, Gina and Jake worked with one of the oldest blocks of Zin, the Passadore block planted in the 1950s, on the famed Poor Ranch. They pressed the whole bunches of Zinfandel immediately, then fermentation started and finished naturally in a stainless steel tank. Fun and lightly fizzy with a pretty light pink/orange hue, this wine tastes like a Cara Cara orange creamsicle, with punctuated bursts of tart raspberries. Class up your next hot tub session with these refreshing and elegant portable bubbles!
2018 Sans Carbonic Carignan Poor Ranch Vineyard CAN 375ml
Gina and Mike make this carbonic red from the ‘Coyote Rock’ block, planted in 1943, which is the oldest block of Carignan on on the Poor Ranch. They make this wine by putting 100% of the whole grape clusters in a stainless tank, feathered in dry ice and then sealed, where it goes through primary, carbonic fermentation naturally (fermentation finished after 25 days). Then the wine is canned, unfined/unfiltered with no added So2. It's juicy, dark and delicious with a nice balance of earth and ripe berry fruit, and a touch of black olive tapenade. SERVE CHILLED.
