2022 Hermit Ram Dead Flowers

Region: North Canterbury < New Zealand

Grape: Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified organic farming (BioGro); glacial gravel soils; 1/3 direct pressed Pinot Noir, 1/3 direct pressed Gewurz & 1/3 whole cluster gewurz fermented together in tank.  Locked down gently and macerated for a month before pressing the whole clusters off; aged in a combo of neutral oak/stainless steel; bottled, unfined/unfiltered, with no added So2; zero-zero; 12.5% ABV

Winemaker: Theo Coles

• A Biodynamic crazy Kiwi field blend, from a vineyard next to the cemetery
• 1/3 direct pressed Pinot Noir, 1/3 direct pressed Gewurz & 1/3 whole cluster gewurz co-fermented
• Quite mental rose-ish light red (with orange vibes) but really pretty
• Gewurz-y but with red Pinot fruits and flowers. So many flowers and big aromatics!
• Serve chilled but not too cold

People are buzzing about Theo's wines, calling them the most exciting thing to come out of New Zealand since Lord of the Rings.  Because he makes super raw, authentic expressions of New Zealand's unique terroir that he calls "pre-technology wines". Theo doesn't own vineyards, but sources fruit from tiny vineyards throughout the Canterbury region of New Zealand and makes wines with basically no intervention, just loads of soul.
