A beautiful Albariño pét-nat from biodynamic legend ConstantinaSotelo! Constantina is a badass female vigneron that has been making
wine under her own label since 1999, with the help of her family.
Together, they've created a micro-project that is way different than
most wineries in the (vastly industrial) Rias Baixas. Her passion is
Albariño and its relation to the soil, playing with different
vinification methods and vessels, such as skin maceration, aging under
flor, aging amphora or aging in cement eggs. The resulting wines are
singular and pure representations of the grape like we've never
experienced before. Her winery is located in the Salnés Valley,
specifically in Castrelo (Cambados), a place which is called the
birthplace of Albariño. The majority of Constantina’s vines are
own-rooted and old, some more than 200 years!
Even if you don’t know Spanish wine, you probably know Albariño, which
has become the Pinot Grigio of Spain, and shows up everywhere, mostly
bland and boring. Not in Constantina's hands. Here she plays with
bottle fermentation to create a gorgeous fizzy Albariño that sports
the cutest witchy label, which she says represents her as a natural
winemaker in this very conventional region where her fellow winemakers
think she's crazy (and perhaps using witchcraft) with all of the
biodynamic stuff that they don't understand. This wine is pretty
magical, so we're down to be part of her coven if this is the house
elixir. Rich and round, with green apple, flowers, wet rock and lemon
floating on a salty sea of soft bubbles, this is pretty and complex
Pét-nat that we NEED in October (because, cute witch) but we want to
drink year-round. But sadly it won't last that long, as quantities
are as limited as the wine is lovely.
