Tuscany, and more specifically Chianti, isn’t somewhere we associate with diversity or natural winemaking. These days it's full of large producers and tourists, and is generally not the place to find unique grape varieties, experimental winemakers, or sadly, refreshing, low-alcohol, low-intervention wines. Luckily, there are a few fantastic exceptions, like this certified organic/practicing biodynamic estate in the Colli Fiorentini DOCG that dates back to 1867, when Polish nobleman, Michele Dzieduszycki bought the property and it’s 12th century Romanesque church (once owned by the Medici family). He was living at the Imperial Court in Vienna at the time, but loved to spend time in the Tuscan countryside. His son, Maurizio, married an Italian woman and moved to Tuscany to raise his family there. Today, Maurizio's son, Massimo, has turned Fattoria di Sammontana into an agricultural property, more olive trees than vines, with a focus on quality and organic farming from the start. The fourth generation, Daniele and Dario, now run the show and are cranking up the fun and experimentation.
A perfect example of the new playful side of this historic estate is this pretty little Alberese, a fun and extremely delicious co-ferment of red and white grapes that is light, energetic, juicy without getting into the mindless glou glou camp. With energetic, poppy red fruit, typical Tuscan earthiness, savory herbs and a mineral edge, it makes the perfect chillable red to pair with all sorts of food (pizza, pasta, burgers, tacos even) -- but is light and easy enough to enjoy for aperitivo.
