A group of friends in the wine biz in New York friends launchedVichingo in 2019. Their plan: to go to the ends of the earth to make
heroic (and hands-off) wine with people they love. Each year they ask
themselves: who do they love in the wine world and where do they want
to make something unexpected? Their Vichingo (viking) first landed in
Tuscany’s Maremma, where they made this lovely zero-zero, skin-contact
Vermentino with friend Anna Maria of Val di Toro, in Tuscany's
southern Maremma region. This isn’t Cypress tree-lined Tuscany, but
the rugged, overgrown coastal edge of the appellation. Five miles
from the sea, Anna Maria Cruciata organically farms the Vermentino
for this salty orange wine. It's Vermentino through and through, with
an herbal quality and golden apple/pear fruit, but with rounder edges
here -- you feel the Tuscan sunshine and chewy skins on the palate,
giving the wine more weight and texture than the more angular
direct-to-press style of Vermentino. A super fun and easy orange
wine for Fall.
