2020 Niepoort 'Nat'cool' Tinto Bairrada 1L
2020 Niepoort 'Nat'cool' Tinto Bairrada 1L
Region: Bairrada < Portugal
Grapes: Baga
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic + biodynamic farming, limestone soils;
grapes are destemmed and fermented carbonically then aged for 10
months in stainless; minimal SO2 at bottling; 11% ABV
There is a revolution happening in the Douro, and Dirk Niepoort is
leading the troops. For centuries this part of Portugal has been known
only for its port, but today, many of these Portuguese winemakers are
beginning to make red and white table wines with the same grapes that
have traditionally only been used for ports. Today, the Niepoort
family owns 80 HA of vines in the Douro, all farmed organically,
incorporating some Biodynamic principles as well. But while his
family estate focuses on traditional Douro wines (read, bigger, more
alcohol, more your daddy's wines), he saw the market demand (both in
Portugal and abroad) for fun, easygoing, and lighter-style natural
wines, and thus created Nat Cool. Made in partnership with
organic/biodynamic growers in different regions for each cuvee, the
Nat Cool project showcases native varietals from Portugal's cooler
regions, in wines that are always fermented naturally, packed in liter
bottles, unfined/unfiltered and with minimal added So2 .
This Tinto from Bairrada is where the project started, and it's our
favorite. Made of 100% Baga, a native varietal that usually renders
big, dark, tannic reds, the Nat'cool version is somehow fresh, bright
and energetic, clocking in at just 11% alcohol. You get vibrant red
cherries and strawberries in a silky mouthfeel with a touch of spritz,
then more red fruits, plus savory herbs and a lovely mineral undertone
which reflects the lime-rich soils and the distinctly Atlantic
climate. It's a great intro to Portuguese wine for Pinot drinkers .
