2020 Mas des Dames 'Ami des Dames' Le Blanc
Region: Languedoc < France
Grapes: Grenache Blanc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic/biodynamic farming (certified);
iron-rich red clay soils; fermented and aged in stainless steel;
bottled unfined, unfiltered, with minimal added SO2; 13.5% ABV
Winemaker: Lidewej van Wilgen
The south of France is heaven to food and wine lovers. Think of how
many writers, artists, cooks, and yes, winemakers have come to
France’s Mediterranean Coast from somewhere else and never left:
that’s what Lidewij Van Wilgen did, and the brilliant organic wines
she crafts at her Terre des Dames estate are the result. An ad exec
in Amsterdam, she needed a change, so she and her husband (who both
enjoyed fine wine) set out to buy a hobby estate in France. They had
heard talk of the Languedoc as the New World of wine in France, so
visited and loved what they saw. They found an 18th century mas
(farm) with 14 hectares of vines, surrounded by that bushy, fragrant
Mediterranean vegetation that they call 'garrigue' - think juniper,
rosemary, thyme, lavender...it is a magical spot and Lidewej was
captivated. Unfortunately, her husband was not, neither with the
estate or her as it turns out, so he returned to Holland and she
stayed with her three daughters, making the shift from city to country
life, learning to be a winemaker, studying viticulture and winemaking.
She finished her studies in 2005 and then she had to find her own way,
and develop her own individual style. Even without a recognizable AOC
designation on her labels, Lidewej’s wines are as place-specific as
they come. Like this gorgeous Grenache Blanc that is full of
Mediterranean sun. She lost most of her crop to hail in 2020, so this
year it's purchased from friends who are also certified organic (hence
the cuvee name this vintage, "Ami des Dames" -- friends of the
ladies).
Fresh, bright and minerally, with a chiseled backbone but juicy
lemons, crisp pear and a bouncy marshmallow texture bringing the fun
and sun to a very elegant wine. A perfect ladies-who-lunch or
everyone brunch wine.
