2020 Les Lunes Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley
2020 Les Lunes Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley
Region: Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley < CA
Grapes: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic, dry farming; wide range of soil types from the 7 different vineyards; grapes were hand-harvested and vinified separately, all de-stemmed and gently macerated at cool temperatures for 4-14 days. The Millen and Pyaleh Vineyard wines were made as rose. The wines were then aged separately for 9 months in a combination of neutral oak and flextanks at which point the components were blended and 15ppm of sulfur was added. The wine was bottled unfined/unfiltered with <15ppm So2; 12.5% ABV; 800 cases
Winemaker: Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig
Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig are one of the OG natty California winemaking duo, making Les Lunes and Populis wines for nearly a decade. They farm and manage over 8 acres of vineyards in Napa and Sonoma themselves, in order to ensure 100% organic, zero-input fruit. And their production facility is literally the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house in Orinda, just east of Berkeley, which allows them to produce wine without the interference of other wineries’ yeasts or influences.
This gorgeous Bordeaux blend is sourced from vineyards in the Sonoma and Alexander valleys that Shaunt and Diego either farm themselves or, at the very least, consult on the farming. They say, "Everything is 100% organic and as we transition to dry-farming, the vineyards are watered minimally depending on vintage conditions. Cover crops are used to increase the organic material, life and vitality of the soils maintains a striking freshness and acidity, along with layers of structure and complexity. The resulting wine is fresh, with bright juicy berry fruit and layers of earthiness and spice characteristic of these Bordeaux-based varieties."
We agree 100%. This is a beautiful Cabernet blend, with high-toned red fruit, sour cherry and menthol/oregano herby thing balanced by a touch of earthy funk. This baby is perfect for drinking now, so pop a bottle with Tuesday night tacos or your holiday feast. It goes with everything, and everyone.
