Grapes: 39% Marsanne 33% Grenache Noir 28% Grenache Blanc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified organic farming at the Conley
Vineyard at 1650 feet elevation, with sandy/loam soils. Marsanne and
Grenache Blanc are direct pressed then fermented in barrel separately
and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 7 months. Grenache Noir is
treated as a red wine. Whole Cluster. Gently foot stomped 1-2 times
per day during ferment, then aged in neutral French oak barrels; juice
is blended and bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites; 12.5%
ABV

A red/white blend of Southern Rhone grapes from Washington State
vineyards - you’ve seen Twilight, this place is all about the
mountains and the rain and the crazy shit that happens in the wild,
green forests. Which is why Joe Swick, 5th generation Oregonian
winemaker who is somewhat of a natural wine pioneer in the Pacific
Northwest, loves sourcing from the pristine Washington State
vineyards. A refresher on Joe: after traveling and working in wine
all over, he returned to Oregon to start his own label in 2013. Like
many young natural winemakers, he doesn’t own any vineyards but
sources grapes from organic or biodynamic vineyards in the Willamette
and Columbia Valleys of Oregon and Washington. He makes a bunch of
different bottles, most with no added So2, and all with cheeky names.
Like this neon pink tweener having an existential crisis, asking the
age-old question, "What Are We?", a mashup of Southern Rhone red and white grapes grown lovingly by Pat and Polly Conley at the eastern end of Washington's Yakima Valley. Sitting somewhere between a dark rosé and light red, this wine is pure joy.
Joe explains his inspiration: "I wanted to make a rose/chillable red
wine from Rhone grapes. I thought this would be an interesting blend
to explore. Mostly white grapes with just a little red. All from the
same site. "What are we?" can mean whatever you want it to mean.
It's sometimes a question people ask when they want to define a
relationship between two humans? Or the question of our existence?"
Philosophy aside, this one's a zinger: light, fresh, poppy red fruit,
dry, a little bitter Campari note, it defies categorization and
reminds you that wine is meant to bring pleasure and nothing more.
Forget collecting, dissecting and geeking out about wine - just drink
this bottle, with friends and a slight chill, and enjoy.
