Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic (uncertified), dry-farmed; sandy soils with clay and marl at 300 meters above sea level. Destemmed in small open-top fermenters. Pinot Gris spends 30 days on skins, Furmint spends 20 days, then pressed off, blended in tank and aged 10 months in older neutral French oak barrels; 10.6% ABV; 333 cases
Heaps Good Wine Co. is a small family-owned and operated in the green hills around in the region of Stajerska (the Slovenian part of Styria), just over the border from Austria. They have immense respect for the land, and even have a super cool blog on their site www.hgw.si/blog/ where they talk about their grapes and vineyards like they are family. Because, in their eyes, they are! And well, we love that.
But, um...Did we hear... ORANGE WINE?!?! Yeah, a Slovenian orange that is peachy, salty, and skinzy with apricot and a splash of something savory (chicken broth maybe?) There's an aromatic spicy "hi-ya!", without being too spicy since the mild tannins aren't overbearing. The dry, peppery finish on the palette is wiped clean by the bright acidity. The skin contact on this bad boy keeps the mouth wanting more...and at 10.6% ABV, we say, wine not!?!
