2020 Domaine de Bartassou Vdf 'L’Arôme'
2020 Domaine de Bartassou Vdf 'L’Arôme'
Region: Junas < Languedoc < France
Grapes: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic, biodynamic, 13ha vineyard, siliceous clay soil, regenerative, no-till farming; direct press into stainless steel; bottled, unfined/unfiltered, with minimal added So2; 13% ABV
Winemaker: Anthony & Audrey Vidal
Anthony Vidal was born a farmer. Coming from a lineage of farmers, he has always had a passion for grapes since he was a boy. Then, he found his winemaking partner, Audrey, a city girl from Marseille. She fell in love with Anthony's vineyards and has been dedicated to agriculture ever since. It was love at first sight, in many ways. "Just a farmer boy....Just a city girl..." It feels like a Journey song! Except in reality there was some drama when the couple decided to make natural wine. Because Audrey comes from a grape growing family, and her father is the president of the co-op in Combas, so when she decided to make wines the way their mentor, Theirry Forestier, of Domaine Mont de Marie (a local natty guy) did, there was quite a scene. Typical story, but the good news is that they made it happen, after first starting to make wine with the co-op, and now they are now producing their own, very impressive, biodynamic juice.
But first they had to tackle their lack of financial resources and equipment which Thierry himself helped them with. They came out of the cooperative cellar this year, and now, they have 13 ha of their own vines, which they are farming biodynamically. 'L’Arôme', meaning 'the aroma', is a very appropriate name for this pretty, aromatic white. There is some body and texture from the Chardonnay, but the Sauv Blanc and Viognier dominate the palate, which is sunny and golden with tropical fruit (mango, pineapple) and nectarine. The acid is fresh but not domineering, and the finish long. So much wine for the price, with something for everyone to love.
