Winemakers: Erin Mitchell and Randy Czech
Our friends, wine industry vet Erin Mitchell and her vineyard managerhusband Randy, make a small but growing lineup of organic wine that
manages to be both interesting and provocative while also being super
friendly to natural wine newbies. Like this fun table wine, a blend
of 5 different red and white grapes from different vineyard sites.
Erin explains how it came about: "Fall & Recover pays tribute to Doris
Humphrey, one of the oft forgotten pioneers of American modern dance
who believed that all human movement is based in falling and
recovering. Randy and I feel that this is a metaphor for our times and
our work as winemakers. One must fall with abandon in order to
fearlessly recover. By combining several white and red lots from the
challenging 2019 vintage, our aim is to make an easy, quaffable wine
at a friendly price." Sadly, it's a one time wine, as the Zinfandel
and Carignane at Talmage Ranch and the Petite Sirah at Poor Ranch (all
50+ year old, head-trained vines, dry farmed and certified organic)
were ripped after the 2019 harvest due to low yields and the often
back-breaking efforts involved in farming them.
Which is a shame, because it's hard to find such meticulously farmed
and naturally produced chillable reds at this price point. Pretty and
floral on the nose, but the palate is all earthy minerality and
bright, tart forest berries. It's simple and honest, a wine for
Tuesday night, to finish with your dinner, not save, because it's
light and clean so Wednesday won't hate you for it.
