2019 Sergio Drago Rosa
2019 Sergio Drago Rosa
Region: Alcamo < Sicily < Italy
Grapes: Nero d'Avola
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: organic farming; early harvest, maceration in press for 5-6 hours then direct delicate pressing and spontaneous fermentation in steel; aged in steel for 5 months; bottled unfined/unfiltered with no added So2; zero-zero; 12.5% ABV
Winemakers: Sergio Drago
Sergio Drago is a young winemaker, trained by the legendary Alessandro Viola, new to Sicily's natural wine scene. He's on the western side of the island in Alcamo, the hot, dry and mostly flat region known primarily for salt (the Trapani salt flats are near here), and for bulk wine. But Sergio produces wines completely organically, while not certified, with no intervention at all, in the vineyard or the cellar.
We are obsessed with his dark fuschia rosato, which is super refreshing and drinks like a baby red. This delicious elixir feels lush and juicy in the mouth but the fruit is tart - think early April strawberries and rhubarb -- with a savory, herbal, grassy thing, some pleasant earthy funk and just a touch of creaminess to round out the acidity. IT’S SO GOOD!!
