Winemaker: Stoppini brothers
The young Stoppini brothers are true 'garagiste' winemakers, making their first vintage in 2019 literally in their garage (which is in Perugia, Umbria). They had been searching for years for the right plot, and finally came across one with abandoned old vines of hyper local grapes on sandy soils, located on the outskirts of Perugia on the Tuscan/Umbrian border, but technically Tuscany. Using no additives and only SS, the brothers started with 5 wines for their first vintage, including this super cool orange wine made of San Colombano (we'd never heard of it either!)
We rarely find wild wines like this in Tuscany, but here you have it, a Tuscan orange with an Umbrian soul. Made of San Colombano grapes (an indigenous varietal) that weren’t harvested until late October (a late pick date compared to most white grapes). This extra hang time gives the Confine 2019 the full warmth of a long summer, boosting the fruit so that the tannins don't overwhelm with skin contact. But this is no over-ripe fruit bomb – that skin-contact lends a light tannin and chewy texture that balances the fruit so perfectly. Dry but juicy, with ripe apricots, rock salt, and lemon zest. If this is the first vintage for the Stoppini brothers, we can't wait to see more!
