2019 Newfound Gravels

Region: Mendocino County < California

Grapes: Syrah/Grenache

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified organic farming; gravel soil over
decomposed granite and limestone; flots were fermented separately but
employed similar methods – 100% whole cluster, wild yeasts, one simple

The Grenache was aged in one 2000L Austrian oval barrel, while the
Carignan was aged in one 2000L French foudré. A total of 14 months
were spent in each vessel before assembly at which point the wines
were racked, blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added
so2; 13.5% ABV; 430 cases

Winemaker: Matt Naumann & Audra Chapman

Matt Naumann was the winemaker at famed biodynamic Pinot Noir producer
Failla for 10 years, so he knows a thing or two about farming and
making wine from Northern California's unique terroir.  His wife,
Audra, who spent decades in wine production and on the floor as a
sommelier, is the boundary pusher, responsible for Newfound's natural
cellar leanings and restrained, lighter style. Together, they’re a
dream team with a shared commitment to a a nature-first farming
approach, which led them to start a 40-acre ranch, vineyard, and
winery in California’s Sierra Foothills in 2016.  They replanted the
vineyards, all organic+++ of course, but for now, while their new
wines grow up, the bulk of the fruit comes from a few select, 100%
organic grape growers that share their same values.  And in an
exciting new development, they're now proud caretakers of 200 goats
grazing the hillsides to naturally compost the site and have created a
fire safe zone by lifting the densely forested canopy; cover cropped
with a recipe of legumes, clovers and nitrogen fixing green manures.
Oh, and they even having a tasting room in Napa -- a local natural
wine operation you can actually visit!

Here's what Audra says about this year's Gravels, the first vintage to
be a blend of Grenache and Carignan: "The Grenache was sourced
entirely from the Cemetery Vineyard and the Carignan entirely from the
Colombini Ranch. Both sites contain similar geology and are planted in
(the simplest of terms) gravel. The Grenache and all of its perfume
and elegance combined with the density and nerve of the Carignan were
the perfect match for our second iteration of ‘Gravels’. "  And while
Gravels is inspired by the rugged coastlines of the French
Mediterranean, it’s the Pacific’s cooling influence that imparts that
unmistakable freshness and tension. We love how Grenache’s herbal
top-notes are amped up to maintain freshness against the dense fruit
profile of Carignan in this bright, elegant and floral blend.  Here,
pretty pops of cherries, cinnamon, and thyme dances on your tongue,
the juicy fruit and soft tannin perfectly balanced by bright acid.
Gravels is a very versatile, medium-bodied food wine, perfect for the
shoulder season and the last fleeting BBQs of Indian summer.  Pair
with burgers or even grilled fish.
