Winemaker: Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig
Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig are one of the OG natty California winemaking duo, making Les Lunes and Populis wines for nearly a decade. They farm and manage over 8 acres of vineyards in Napa and Sonoma themselves, in order to ensure 100% organic, zero-input fruit. And their production facility is literally the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house in Orinda, just east of Berkeley, which allows them to produce wine without the interference of other wineries’ yeasts or influences.
This is a tiny-production wine more experimental Licorne Mechante (the wicked unicorn) line, which gives them an outlet for wilder and more experimental wines. In 2016 we decided to play with long macerations. The guys describe this wine as follows, "Light, juicy, and ephemeral, yet still structured and balanced, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Sonoma, and Cabernet Franc from Placer County offers a fresher take on a California Bordeaux blend. With shorter macerations and less aging, it showcases the blue-fruit character from our farmed vineyards. This is a delightful bistro/table wine."
It is a delightful wine on so many levels. Grippy and spicy with tart but deep blue/black fruit and smooth tannins, riding on a firm backbone of acidity. There’s not a ton of meat on the bones, but the bones are good. And the finish is strong, with a wild, animal note that linger long after the blue moon has faded.
