Considering our penchant for easy going, chillable reds, it is rare
that we find ourselves enamored with a wine of structure and body like
the Vigne d’Albert, but here we are! In fact, we rarely find ourselves
in this off-the-radar region of South West France, but this wine is
worth the trip. Château Tour des Gendres has been in the de Conti
family since the 1920’s, but only operated as a working winery since
the 1980’s when 3rd generation Jean took over. At the time, he was
mostly interested in the horses on the farm, and started replanting
and renovating the vineyards as an afterthought. But he was soon
bitten by the winemaking bug and his brother Luc joined to officially
bottle and sell the wine. They converted to organic farming in 1994(!)
and ever since have continuously moved the bar forward in terms of
less intervention in the cellar, and less sulfur, to none at all
now(!!) Vinified with a short maceration time and quick fermentation,
this Vigne d'Albert bottle capture the big fruit in their grapes
without the heft of too much tannin. It is a strategy we wish more
winemakers working with thicker skinned, more tannic reds would think
about, because we can actually taste the terroir and the grapes, and
it makes the wine much more versatile with food. And we are pulling
this out for about every opportunity to grill that comes our way! The
big plum and fig flavors and slight smokiness plus savory olive are
going to pair perfectly with everything from a burger to sardines with
charred lemon!
