2019 Château Renaissance Bordeaux Supérieur
2019 Château Renaissance Bordeaux Supérieur
Region: St. Emillon < Bordeaux < France
Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified organic by Ecocert & Biodynamic by Demeter; limestone clay soils full of tiny fossilized oysters; stainless steel fermentation with pump-overs by hand; aged in stainless steel for 2/3, oak barrels for 1/3; no added So2; 13.5% ABV
Winemaker: Gérard Descrambe
Light, fresh, glou glou Bordeaux that has all the classic Right Bank feels without the stuffiness of your daddy's trophy bottles!
Somehow in St. Emillon there is a historic 7.5 hectare château owned by cartoonist Gérard Descrambe, known as much for his commitment to organic wines as for his cheeky labels. He took over the estate from his grandpa, who planted the vines in 1932. These vineyards have never seen the slightest chemical product, and have been certified organic since 1954, making the estate the oldest certified property in Bordeaux. The estate used to wear the prestigious St. Emillon AOC label, but in WW2 they lost their status because soils were deemed “too heavy”. So no Gérard is not constrained by the appellation rules and is free to make the kind of wine he wants to drink -- lighter and fresher, less oak, less tannin, lower ABV -- and adorn the bottles with irreverent art. He's a political cartoonist in the Charlie Hebdo galaxy, and his cartoonist pals started supplying him with subversive labels for this entry-level bottling in 1974, a fun tradition that carries on.
We're rarely smitten by a Bordeaux wine, but this adorable, proudly natural table wine is hard not to love. Light, fresh and almost glou glou in its drinkability, grapey juiciness is tempered by a host of crunchy, spicy flavors, like cardamom and anise, inky black fruit and some earthy, grounding forest floor. Delightful with a slight chill. A very versatile food red (also great with cheese!)
