Winemaker: Pedro Marques
Young winemaker Pedro Marques was certified organic in 2012 and isestablishing a tradition of quality and purposeful winemaking in this
region on the LIsbon coast (only 8 km from the Atlantic ocean), an
area mostly known for quantity, not quality. It's a cool growing
climate, thanks to the nearby Atlantic, so grapes struggle to get ripe
enough and retain high acid, but Pedro has found a way to make
textural, juicy wines, with no trickery, just time on the lees, long
fermentations and co-ferments. As a result, Vale da Capucha wine has
become known as one of the pioneers in Portugal's natural wines
movement, making super hands-off but squeaky clean wines - no funk
here.
The light red/white co-ferment is a perfect example of Pedro's
brilliance: it’s a vivid wine – very perky and bright, laced with pink
peppercorn, cranberry and sour cherry -- that wakes you up, but
doesn't make your mouth pucker. Dry, light and refreshing, it’s a
classic vin de soif that shines with a slight chill.
