Winemaker: Marco Marrocco
Marco’s family owned this pristine vineyard land, in a medieval hill town on the border between Lazio and Campania, for generations. His grandfather basically sold out to international varieties and sold off much of the grapes, but in 2010 Marco Marocco, an engineer, took over the 3.5 hectares of vineyard land, returned to school (at age 37) to get his Italian Somm and Oenology degrees, then headed off to make wine in Bordeaux. When he returned to his land a few years later, Marco revived abandoned, ancient vines that had been grown there for centuries. Like Lecinaro, featured here in this savory, textural, utterly seductive rosato. This is HANDS DOWN my favorite rosé of the year! It's salty and juicy, and tastes like a perfect, ripe cantaloupe, with a touch of candied watermelon and maybe some Proscuitto on the side. OMG we love this wine! The name translates to "little brother devil", in homage to Fra Diavolo, a famous guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples in 1806 and went down in history as an “inspirational practitioner of popular insurrection” -- a concept that seems very timely today, when we're all in need of inspiration amidst the current popular insurrection.
