Region: Marsala < Sicily < Italy
Grapes: Zibibbo
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; 3-day maceration on the skin,
Winemaker: Nino Barraco
Like so many new generation Italian winemakers, Nino took over his
family’s vineyards in 2004 and started working organically, using only
the native grapes of his Western Sicily, and focusing on single
vineyard expressions of the grapes. Note: in Western Sicily, this is
all very rare. As are his wines, which really taste like Marsala, a
barren stretch of coastline with dry winds, golden light and an
omnipresent sea. Nino’s wines are aromatically intense, mysteriously
light and incredibly saline.
This is Nino's Zibibbo, a super aromatic grape one finds in these
parts of Sicily. The smells here take you straight to the island,
fragrant with herbs, citrus and spice. It’s clean and bone-dry on the
palate, with bright, tropical fruit, limey acidity and a saline finish
bringing serious refreshment. It tastes vibrant and healthy, like
it's chock full of Vitamin C from the Sicilian sun - breakfast juice
of champions!
