Grapes: Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; 50+ year old vines on soils of decomposing granite dome with volcanic ash topsoil; all three grapes varieties were briefly foot-trod and allowed to cold soak under a blanket of CO2 for three days and to spontaneously ferment whole cluster with no yeast or SO2 additions. Winemaker: Bryan Harrington
MOUNTAIN MAGIC: Named for a Miwok Native American term for a rare Sugar Pine, the Sumu Kaw Vineyard sits is one of the highest vineyards (3000 feet) in the Sierra Nevada. True mountain wine!
Bryan is one of the only true urban winemakers in SF, working out of an industrial facility in Bayview to make a boatload of tiny lot (<100 cases) natural wines, all from organic (or better) vineyards, with no temperature control, no manipulations, and little or no SO2. Here he sources Rhone varietals from the Suma Kaw vineyard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and gives them the carbonic treatment. On paper this looks like a classic Rhone blend, but the high elevation and volcanic soils give this wine a distinctly Cali character - and the whole cluster, carbo treatment takes it to a whole new level of freshness. You get dense black fruits (black cherry, blackberry) with some peppery spice, bright acidity, and grippy rocks on the finish.
