2018 Easkoot Esther Frances Vin Gris of Carignan
2018 Easkoot Esther Frances Vin Gris of Carignan
Region: Mendocino < California
Grapes: Carignan
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; dry-farmed, 80 year-old vines;
gently pressed then fermented and aged in steel tank; bottled
unfined/unfiltered with minimal added SO2; 75 cases; 13% ABV
Winemaker: Mark Pasternak
If you thought the greatest rosé values could come only from Provence,
Cali born-and-bred Easkoot will make you think twice: when it comes to
sheer price-to-quality, this Provençal-syle bottle wins, hands down!
From a small Marin-based producer, Easkoot (named after the sailor who
made his final landfall in Marin and later became the surveyor to
first stake out this winery's vineyards), works with NorCal cool and
foggy sites to make mostly Pinot-based wines, the exception being this
one 80-year-old gnarled parcel of Carignan in Mendocino, where the
grapes for this pale salmon-colored rosé are born.
The juice is gently pressed from healthy organic grapes (not a
bleed-off) to ferment and age in stainless, then bottled shortly
after, preserving its laser-sharp tension, delicate red fruit, and
salty minerality. Crisp, dry and herbal, with cantaloupe and red
fruit, this is clean, classic (and tiny-production) rosé with layers
of character and complexity. It's also totally off the radar and an
incredible value for the price — two reasons we love it so much. Buy
