Winemaker: Benjamin Taillandier
Benjamin started on the conventional winemaking path - winemakingschool, job at a big winery. But then he met natural winemaker
Jean-Baptiste Senat, began working with him in his cellar, and quickly
changed direction. In 2007 he returned to his family’s hometown of
Caunes-Minervois (Languedoc) and purchased 9 hectares of vineyards,
which, from the start, he worked organically, all by hand, eventually
converting to biodynamics. He also runs a terrific wine bar downtown.
Benjamin feels that many of the wines in the Minervois AOC are too
concentrated and alcoholic, and works hard to make wines that are
lighter, fresher and lower in alcohol than most. He is happily leading
the charge for Minervois "vin de soif", our favorite style of everyday
red wine.
His 'Viti Vini Bibi' blend, from 30-year-old vines, is super bright,
honest, and a touch rustic. A play on the phrase "I came, I saw, I
conquered" (but this is I came, I saw, I drank), this is a highly
drinkable light to medium-bodied red, with red berries both sour and
juicy, good acid, more structure than your average glou glou, and a
long, smoky finish. Perfect for bucolic countryside sipping, with a
chewy baguette, some ripe cheese and an interesting companion (if
only) - or (more likely), Tuesday night dinner at home, in the city,
with leftovers. And everything in between.
