2018 Dewey’s Barsotti Vineyard Cabernet Franc
2018 Dewey’s Barsotti Vineyard Cabernet Franc
Region: El Dorado County > California
Grapes: Cabernet Franc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; decomposed granite soil, 2600
foot elevation. 100% whole cluster ferment, punchdowns via foot
treading 2x/day, pressed to a combination of stainless steel and
neutral oak barrels. Aged 15 months; bottled unfined and unfiltered
with minimal added So2; 115 cases; 12.2% ABV
Winemaker: Charlie Miller
Dewey’s is a relatively new project from husband and wife Charlie
Miller and Emma Rosenbush. Charlie was formerly the assistant
winemaker at Cruse Wine Co (swoon, we love these wines!) and started
the Dewey’s label in Michael Cruse’s cellar with a surprisingly
delicious Vermentino, also from the Barsotti Vineyard. In 2018 when
they were offered the opportunity to take a small amount of Cabernet
Franc and they jumped at the chance. Charlie and Emma, partner and GM
at Cala in San Francisco, pride themselves on letting Dewey’s wines
(named after their dog) be their quirky selves and allow the wine to
follow the lead of the vintage and what the grapes and soil provide.
The Barsotti Vineyard is legendary for it's high elevation, pink
granite soils, and immaculate farming by the Mansfield family. In
2018, the first vintage of the cab franc, they nailed the pick date -
early enough to keep acid high and alcohol low (it's just 12%!), but
ripe enough to capture the red fruited, herbal side of Cab Franc,
instead of just the spicy green character. While on the lighter side,
there is still so much going on – tart cherry, pomegranate, eucalyptus
and still lots of good Cab Franc pepper and floral notes. This wine
is chillable, but not necessarily gulpable – you’ll want to enjoy the
nuances of flavor over a meal – maybe even something on the grill, or
some of the first local salmon.
