2018 Contravento 'Alto Mare'
2018 Contravento 'Alto Mare'
Region: Abruzzo < Italy
Grapes: Trebbiano, Malvasia Di Candia, Passerina, Fiano.
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified organic/biodynamic farming; limestone
soils; 2-day skin maceration then fermented and aged in stainless
steel for 12 months; bottled unfined/unfiltered with no added So2;
zero-zero; 12% ABV
Meaning “upwind” in Italian, Controvento is a 5 hectare vineyard in the Fosso delle Farfalle, a nature reserve known for its butterfly population, in the Rocca San Giovanni region of Abruzzo just kilometers off the Adriatic Sea. Enzo’s farm is certified organic, vines are cooled by the salty sea breeze, and zero chemicals of any kind are ever used. Enzo’s philosophy of wine making is strict, as he’s trying to make wines like his grandfather did, in the purest possible form, with nothing added, nothing taken away. He’s new to the scene, but the wines are already hella allocated.
Like this Alto Mare ("deep seas"), a vibrant skin-contact white blend that is hazy and golden in the glass. Malvasia is an incredibly aromatic variety, and it dominates the nose -- you get whiffs of IPA, lemon, yeast, ocean and Kern's peach nectar. It tastes even more amazing, like ripe peaches, chamomile and grapefruit riding on a salty wave of freshness and acidity. We were lucky to get 2 cases of this intoxicating nectar, but it won't last. So, if orange wines are your thing, grab some now. Serve chilled, but not ice cold, with vegan tacos.
