Salina is a dreamy island off the coast of Sicily, part of thearchipelago known as the Aeolian islands. The islands are Unesco
protected and are one of the most important locations in the world for
volcano scientists. Salina, the largest in the chain, is well-suited
to viticulture not only because of the mineral-rich volcanic soil, but
also because the island is big enough and not entirely vertical or
rocky, so real vineyards can flourish here. But working the land here
is still not easy, which is why they call it "heroic viticulture" --
because plots are small and terraced, water is scarce, and all work
must be done by hand. So by default, producers mostly work with
minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery, often using skin
contact, amphora and concrete vessels instead of wood, not because
these things are fashionable but because that’s the customary way of
doing things here.
One of the wine pioneers here is Lydia Colosi, who established Cantine
Colosi with her husband in 1987, starting with her family's vineyards.
While her son Piero now makes the wine, she's the force behind the
operations, including the organic transition of all of the estate's
vineyards, both on Salina and mainland Sicily. We had the pleasure of
visiting Salina and staying in Lydia's home a few years back, and have
been huge fans of both Colosi and the distinctive island wines of
Salina ever since. Like this Salina Bianco, an archetypical island
wine. With ripe tropical fruit plus some juicy peach, Mediterranean
herbs, flinty rocks and a salty edge, this is the most perfect summer
wine, beach wine, boat wine -- a white that truly has the power to
transport you to a warmer, sunnier, happier place.
