2018 Brick & Mortar Vin Rubis
2018 Brick & Mortar Vin Rubis
Region: Yountville AVA < Napa Valley < California
Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; multiple alluvial bands of
both sedimentary soils and clays along with volcanic outcrops;
Chardonnay is left whole cluster and transferred to an open-top tank.
Pinot Noir is destemmed and added on top of the whole-cluster
Chardonnay. From there, the fruit undergoes a 5+ day cold soak and is
natively fermented with daily punch downs by hand, before being
lightly pressed to 100% neutral barrels for aging; bottled
unfined/unfiltered with <10ppm So2; 11.5% ABV; 185 cases
Winemaker: Matt + Alexis Iaconis
We LOVE finding Napa wine that checks all of the Rock Juice boxes.
Brick & Mortar, a tiny project started in 2011 by a young couple, Matt
and Alexis Iaconis, is always our go-to producer. Not only because
they sound like the coolest couple on the planet. Alexis is a
hospitality superstar, most recently the wine director at Calistoga's
The Restaurant at Meadowood before it burned in last summer's fires.
Matt went to UC Davis to play football and study Atmospheric Science
(he wanted to be an astronaut). But an intro course on winemaking
changed everything for him. After college, he worked at wineries here
and abroad, eventually working with the Antinori family in Napa Valley
– a connection that enabled him to get the organic fruit he needed to
make his own wine. The grapes for this wine come from the Block House Vineyard (originally planted in 1836), one of the oldest in Napa
Valley. With its close proximity to the bay, Block House is a
relatively cool growing site, usually blanketed with cold wet fog
until early afternoon, allowing sufficient hang time for phenolic
ripeness while maintaining freshness and acidity.
We're big fans of their wine in general, but the Vin Rubis, a blend of
Pinot and Chardonnay, is super fun and unique not only because of its
red/white co-ferment status (a style we love), but because it drinks
more like a silky Gamay than the usual poppy red glou-glou that often
results from the red/white intermingling. Light ruby red in color,
Vin Rubis has a tight carbonic structure but the texture of a
luxurious silk pillowcase. Packed with lush black raspberry, red
apple and some bitter citrus notes, and a savory, herbal edge, this is
pure, restrained fruit with no intrusion from oak or tannin. Elegant
and easy drinking, this wine shines brightest with a slight chill.
