2016 St. Rey Chenin Blanc ‘SRV’
2016 St. Rey Chenin Blanc ‘SRV’
Price: $18
Region: Clarksburg < CA
Grapes: Chenin Blanc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming, sandy clay soils; dry-farmed, foot trodden; pressed to tank, then returned to barrel and concrete egg until bottling in January; this one was filtered since it didn’t complete malo; 50ppm SO2; 335 cases; 12.4% ABV
Winemaker: Craig Haarmeyer
Another wine from Craig, this is the still wine from the same organic vineyard from which the Pet’Nat also featured hails – deep in the Clarksburg AVA near Sacramento, where the wet marine air pours in. They do several passes through the vineyard, and grapes for this bottling are on the second pass, so they get a little more hang time and ripeness. This is classic Chenin made with California sunshine – slightly serious with a touch of the lanolin/sheep’s wool savory quality for which Chenin is known, but fairy-dusted with peach and nectarine sparkles. So much wine for the price!
