2016 Domaine La Colombe Chasselas ‘Brez’
2016 Domaine La Colombe Chasselas ‘Brez’
Region: Lake Geneva > La Côte > Vaud > Switzerland
Grapes: Chasselas
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Demeter certified biodynamic farming;
limestone/sand/silt soil; stainless steel fermentation and aging; 2/3
of the juice goes through ML, 1/3 does not; bottled unfiltered with
minimal added So2; 12% ABV
Winemaker: Violaine & Laura Paccot
LADY IN CHARGE: Violaine and her daughter Laura may have the help of
the men in their family, but the ladies wearing the pants in this
vineyard. They wish to “respect natural rhythms” in their winemaking
and are one of the first estates in Switzerland to farm
biodynamically.
The Paccot family has been farming in the area since the early 1900s,
and the winery was established in 1961, on the northwest shore of Lake
Geneva in between the Jura in France and the Alps. Raymond Paccot is
the founder, but daughters Chloé, Marion and Laura have taken the
reins, with Laura, a passionate supporter of biodynamics, making the
wine. We are huge fans of Swiss wines, but can rarely afford them,
because the Swiss drink most of the supply, and what gets exported to
the US is subject to a hefty tariff.
So, we’re excited to bring you our first Swiss wine, the
single-vineyard Chasselas ‘Brez’ from a site best known for its high
limestone content, making for a leaner, spicy style of Chasselas. This
wine is linear and precise, with an almost shocking bolt of lime and
citrus that opens up with peppery spice, crisp pear and a salty,
minerally finish. Drinks beautifully now, but also has the legs to
age another few years.
