In California, wines that meet our standards are harder to come by because the majority of the vineyards are not owned by the winemaker, making it difficult for them to control fruit quality. This is not the case with Palmina, whose owner and winemaker, Steve Clifton, worked with Honea Vineyard owners, Milt and Marilyn Honea, from before the vines even went into the ground. The land was planted specifically to Italian varietals for Palmina, both parties agreeing that the sleepy, foggy mornings and warm days presented a unique opportunity. The entire Honea family, including their three children and ten grandchildren participated in the initial planting, and it is still family-owned. Arneis, a grape native to Piedmont, does particularly well here, surprising, since it is known to be extremely difficult to grow. This wine reminds us of the Italian Arneis, but with a distinctly California bent. Rich in both texture and mouthfeel, the flavors unfold in several layers, from white flowers to pear, almond and lime zest. Drink now, with all manner of pasta, chicken and pork, or hold onto it a year if you are so inclined – this baby has legs…
