Region: Redwood Valley < Mendocino < California
Grapes: Carignan
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; stony loam soils: 90-year old dry-farmed vines; grapes are foot trodden, then fermented whole cluster in an open top tank; aged for 10 months in neutral French oak then bottled unfined/unfiltered; minimal added SO2; 12.1% ABV
Winemaker: Ryan and Megan Glaab
Another wine from husband + wife duo Megan and Ryan Glaab. This is old-vine Carignan from the dry-farmed, organic-since-planting Testa vineyard just north of Ukiah in Mendocino County tended lovingly by Rusty and Maria Martinson (the 4th generation in the family to do so). Rustic and smoky, with exuberant red fruit, cherry skin, balsamic and cedar. A satisfying, fruit-forward red that gives the illusion of richness, yet clocks in at only 12.1% alcohol. A dangerously drinkable wine, for grilled chicken or eggplant or a pasta with black olives.
