2013 Goiset Bourgogne Rouge Corps de Garde
Price: $30
Region: Burgundy < France
Grapes: Pinot Noir
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Demeter certified biodynamic; 40-70 year old vines on Kimmeridgian limestone soils; Macerated and fermented in open wood fermenters before being transferred to 300-litre Burgundian barrels, 20% new with the remainder in old for 12 months.
Winemaker: Guilhem Goisot
A former Chablis estate (Saint Bris, where the Goisot family estate is located, used to be part of Chablis until the AOC boundaries changed after phylloxera) these guys are mostly known for their racy whites (you might remember the Aligote we featured in Rock Juice previously). But their sole red, this lovely single vineyard Pinot Noir, is quietly elegant and soulful, a pure expression of underlying chalky terroir. Not big, boastful or obvious in any way, this wine is secretive and shy, with a current of energy under the surface. Decant or pour a big glass and let her breathe to reveal layers of tart raspberries, rose-petals and peppery red fruit, and surprising deep, dark savory notes. Amazing value for certified biodynamic Burgundy Pinot with some age!
