2019 Garalis Roseus

2019 Garalis Roseus

Region: Lemnos < Aegean Islands < Greece

Grapes: Muscat of Alexandria 94% / Limnio 6%

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic (certified) farming; sulphuric volcanic soil with limestone; grapes macerate for one day then fermented and aged in stainless steel; bottled unfined with light paper filtration and minimal So2; 12.5%

Winemaker: Manolis Garalis

Manolis Garalis is a 3rd generation wine grower on the volcanic, arid island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea.   He started his own winery in 2006 in order to see his beautiful organic grapes turned into wine of the same caliber.  He works only with local grapes, like the super aromatic Muscat of Alexandria and spicy Limnio here. And there's a lot of history in these unique grapes.  Limnio is the oldest referenced grape in the world, mentioned by Aristotle, Homer and other ancient Greek philosophers and has been on the island for thousands of years. Muscat of Alexandria has become the main grape since the 1920’s, when it was brought over from Egypt.

We fell hard for this unique rosé, with lush, juicy nectarine and passion fruit tempered by a slight grapefruit bitterness and sea-salty finish.  We'd love to be day drinking this on a beach in Greece this summer, but we'll settle for sipping it stateside and planning next summer's real Greek island getaway!
