Our buddy Noel of Purity turned us on to his buddy, Craig West, who makes wine at Noel’s Richmond facility for his upstart natural wine label, Gearhead. Craig was a fisherman and is still a baker for Acme Bread by day, but when he met Noel and started helping him with production, he decided that this was his calling and pivoted to wine (on the side for now, but he's hoping to make the FT plunge in 2021). Craig is scrappy like most of the new natty crew in California, and searches high and low for organic fruit to purchase. He makes tiny lots (like 30-60 cases each) of wine, often co-fermented, all foot tread, many with carbonic maceration, and all sans added sulfur. Yet they're all clean and supremely drinkable. We're big fans, and invite you to get to know the range of Craig's wines with this sample of three different bottles, which will rotate according to inventory (because he never makes more than 60 cases of any one wine).
