2020 Schützenhof Randale Pet Nat

2020 Schützenhof Randale Pet Nat

Region: Burgenland < Austria

Grapes: Concord, Delaware, Elvira, Ripatella

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic/biodynamic farming (Demeter); sandy loam soils with rocky topsoil; 2 hours skin contact then pressed off; spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and used barrels with no temperature control, then 4 months in stainless steel sur lie before being bottled for their final fermentation under crown cap without being disgorged and with no added SO2; zero-zero; 9% ABV

Winemaker: Kristina Faulmaker

Crazy red pet-nat from a woman winemaker in Austria!   But rather than the usual Austrian grape suspects, this oddball is made from North American hybrid varietals, mostly Concord with a few other weirdos one never sees in wine.  The result is bizarrely delicious, love it or hate it, red plum juice with gold sparkles (for real).  Super grapey, almost to the level of Welch's grape juice or Kool-aid but with no sticky sweetness.  Instead, a sharp mineral edge, like pulling out the famed sword in the stone.  So light and low ABV, its like drinking an adult Capri Sun or vitamin water.  STAFF FAVE
