A glorious orange wine from Austria, where the hills are literally
alive with the sound of music!

Erich Andert and his brother Michael are brothers making waves with
Zweigelt and skin macerated white wines in their small corner of
southern Burgenland. They are obsessive biodynamic farmers tending to
a huge range of crops and animals on their 4.5 hectare farm. Michael
learned biodynamics during his 19 years working for Sepp Moser, a
well-known biodynamic farm not far away. Erich has a sommelier and
sales background, working for some of the best restaurants, wine shops
and importers in Austria over the years. Together they’re making some
f*ing great natural wine, unique and refreshing for this part of
Austria that is still pretty stodgy.

But stodgy is not how anyone would describe this beguiling orange
wine.  It's a fresh, natty take on “Gemischter Satz”, a Viennese
designation for a field blend of at least three different white
varieties, one that is usually the cheap plonk served in wine taverns.
Here the blend of Olaszrizling, Grauburgunder, Grüner Veltliner,
Chardonnay, and Frühroter Veltliner (Roter Veltliner x Silvaner)
spends 4 days on the skins in open vats. It’s not worked over too hard
and punchdowns are more to keep the cap wet than going for heavy
extraction. The mixed vineyard was planted in 1974 is only .2
hectares, so they make very little of this wine, sadly. According to
Erich, “If we have a big Andert family party we drink 10 Percent of
it.”   So, we're super fortunate to get any of this golden elixir,
which is bright and juicy, with grapefruit and under ripe nectarine
giving a tangy, puckery pop that is balanced by a soft wave of floral
nectar that starts with honey and finishes with orange blossom and
salty acidity.  Such a cool wine, we only wish there was more to go
around.
