Winemaker: Camillo Magoni

Ever since discovering the wild wines of Bichi, we've been fascinated
by the emerging Mexican natural wine scene, which now has some new
kids on the block: TreSomm, founded in 2017 by a trio of wine-crazy
sommeliers.  It started when the three amigos Taylor Grant, Conner
Mitchell, and Christopher Miller, M.S. took a trip down to the Valle
to visit wineries and were overwhelmed by how connected they felt to
the region.  On the last visit of the day, they stopped by Bodegas
Magoni and tasted the wines with winemaker Camillo Magoni’s son in
law, Julio.  After many laughs (and many glasses), they arranged to
come back to meet Camillo.

Originally from Valtellina, Italy, Camillo is a pioneer of the Baja
wine industry.  He moved to the Valle in 1965 and over the years has
planted his vineyards with indigenous European varietals, and has
since been farming organically and making the kind of restrained wine
these three somms loved, so they formed a partnership with Camillo to
the very unique (for Mexico) but authentic expressions of grapes like
Grignoliño, Aligoté, and Touriga Nacional from Baja's terroir.

We asked Taylor to tell us about this wine, her favorite (and
namesake): "This plot is from right beside the winery on sandy soils
adding to the elegance and aromatics of the wine.  It’s made from
organically farmed vineyards, aged in neutral vessels on the lees for
6 months with no additions or oak to allow for a pure expression of
the terroir.  We had previously been working with Aligoté, but after
vinifying a small amount of Pinot Blanc, I knew we had something
special. Pinot Blanc is the perfect complement to add texture and
soften the lazer sharp Aligoté – they are related after all!  To
distinguish from our mono-varietal Aligoté, I changed the spelling to
the phonetic sound, and yes, after my own name and fondness for this
wine.  We only made a mere 25 cases of this wine.  The plots are
extremely small but we are grateful to work with the Magoni family who
has planted an abundance of different grape varieties to source from.
We are constantly seeing which grapes excel in the climate & soils of
the Valle and will continue to experiment in small productions like
this."

This wine is gorgeous: clean, mineral-driven, crystalline and elegant,
with a strong saline component, it's a little broader than your
average Burgundian Aligoté -- as one would expect from the hot Baja
climate -- but the golden fruit, zippy acid and firm backbone separate
this bottle from the pack of mostly fruit-forward, fleshy and often
fat white wines of Mexico.  Super tiny production - they made 25 cases
and we got 4, but they won't last long.
