Meaning “upwind” in Italian, Controvento is a 5 hectare vineyard in the Fosso delle Farfalle, a nature reserve known for its butterfly population, in the Rocca San Giovanni region of Abruzzo just kilometers off the Adriatic Sea.  Enzo’s farm is certified organic, vines are cooled by the salty sea breeze, and zero chemicals of any kind are ever used. Enzo’s philosophy of wine making is strict, as he’s trying to make wines like his grandfather did, in the purest possible form, with nothing added, nothing taken away.  He’s new to the scene, but the wines are already in high demand, and thus, hard to get enough or keep in stock.

Like this 'Limite Acque Sicure' ("safe waters"), a light red/white blend that registers high on the funk meterLight bodied with a grippy finish, its wild and bright, with herbal and tart red fruit, smoky minerality and prominent VA (volatile acidity) on the front, finishing with hints of tart cherry and Mexican Coca-Cola.  Serve chilled, pour small glasses and finish within an hour or two of opening, as the mouse starts to creep in with air.  But a most enjoyable wine if you enjoy adventure in the glass!
