Winemaker: Elisa Semino

In the Colli Tortonesi region of Piedmont, Elisa Semino is known as
the ‘Queen of Timorasso’.  We had the pleasure of visiting her a few
years ago, and we're surprised by how different this region is from
the rest of Piemonte.  Sharing a border with Liguria and not far from
the sea, it felt more laid back coastal than fancy wine region, I
mean, focaccia is plentiful here, which is amazing.  And the vines
take on a bit of that coastal influence, resulting in fresh, salty
wines.

So it makes sense that while the rest of Piedmont is red
grape-centric, in the Colli Tortonesi white grapes thrive. Timorasso
is the long-lived variety for your cellar, but Cortese is the one we
like for everyday drinking (and same for the locals!). In Elisa’s
hands this so-called ‘everyday’ grape becomes something special and it
starts with the farming, which her father shepherded to organic
starting in the early 2000s. They haven’t used weed killer in over 20
years! Some of their Cortese vines were planted in 1977, some in 1999,
and all are massal selection. We know that old vines (especially those
propagated from existing plants nearby as in massal selection) planted
in healthy soil can yield some awesome wines but winemaking helps too
– namely hands off and that is Elisa’s style. After a brief time in
contact with the skins, the juice is pressed and ages on lees for 5
months to add texture, but that is it – nothing else added or taken
away, except a little SO2. It is bottled under screw cap and we have
to say, this only adds to the Cortese’s potential as a poolside and
picnic basket companion! This vintage is big on the floral notes with
citrus and melon on the palate and a steely, minerally finish. Perfect
for whetting the palate for some chips and dip, sandwiches and veggie
skewers!
