This surprising little Sangio out of Umbria is a breath of fresh air!
Known for the tannic, intense Sagrantino grape, Umbria is the last
place we expect to find a lithe and nervy red, ready to drink no
matter what the occasion. Luca Baccarelli and his father are behind
Cantina Roccafiore in the Todi area of Umbria, just south of Colli
Martani, which funnels a cold wind through their vineyards in the
afternoon, providing not only good ventilation but a vital cooling
effect. They are still able to harvest in mid-October which means lots
of phenolic ripeness (= flavor) and not a lot of alcohol. Their estate
comprises about 14 hectares in total and Luca and his father use their
background in the energy business to apply many unconventional
sustainability measures. For example, all of the energy for the winery
is powered by solar panels, their tractors run on sunflower oil, they
ship in light weight glass bottles to reduce energy consumption and
save rainwater in a reservoir. All of this on top of organic
viticulture, minimal and clean cellar work, and low SO2! The nickname
‘Melograno’ means pomegranate, which is an apt descriptor for this
wine. The color is pale red but bright and nearly transparent, and the
palate shows typical Sangiovese sour cherry notes with some
strawberry, and yes, tart, yummy pomegranate mixed in. It is a perfect
pairing for spring veggies like baby onions, green garlic, or
asparagus with a little parmesan sprinkled on top!
