2018 Ferlat Silvano Sauvignon Blanc

2018 Ferlat Silvano Sauvignon Blanc

Region: Isonzo DOC < Friuli < Italy

Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; soil is made of clay and
stones left over from the dried river beds; aged on the lees in
concrete; bottled unfined/unfiltered with minimal So2; 13% ABV

Winemaker: Moreno Ferlat

Founded in 1950, Ferlat Silvano is a small organic, family-owned
estate in the eastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the DOC Friuli
Isonzo, which has the same soils as Collio, its more famous
neighboring DOCG, but more rocks.  And we love rocks in our wine!
Moreno (formerly cellar master of Livio Felluga) and his father Silvio
make old-school wine from local grapes, farming organically and using
nothing but a small amount of So2 at bottling -- not because they
identify as "natural", but because that's the way they've always done
it.  And that most small estates around them do it.  It's just wine.

Moreno, who grew up playing in these vineyards, decided to carry on
the estate started by his father because he sees his job as expressing
the character of his land through its native products, the grapes,
Friuli's most important crop.  And here, Sauvignon Blanc is top notch,
the one that sparkles in Friuli's unique terroir, expressing itself
differently than the million other versions of SB around the world.
Ferlat's SB is exceptional, and so unique.  Mineral driven and crisp,
it leads with a lighter, leaner profile of fresh herbs and wet rock
and finishes with a plush texture (from ageing on its lees) and ripe
golden fruit (apple, pear, chamomile) that lingers.  SB haters, give
this one a shot.  Totally different than your NZ or Cali Sauv Blancs,
this is a beautifully textured version with the perfect balance of
racy and rich, with no cat pee or jalapeno to distract.
