Winemaker: Andrea Occhipinti

Andrea Occhipinti started his eponymous winery to focus on indigenous Lazio grapes, Grechetto Rosso and Aleatico, but has since segued into Grechetto Bianco as well. While slightly more well known, Grechetto Bianco is generally associated with Umbria, which neighbors Lazio to the northeast. After tasting the Fremito, it’s clear that this grape is very much at home in Gradoli where Andrea’s vines are located. The land is adjacent to the largest volcanic lake in Europe, which affects both the climate and soil, and comes across pretty distinctly in the wine. Deep golden in the glass,  it smells like flowers and herbs, but on the palate the savory, salty and mineral side dominates, with the lovely fruit (tart apple, ripe pear and pineapple) subtly balancing things out . This skin-contact white (an orange wine, technically) has a lot to say, so use a larger glass to make sure you max out the complex flavors. The Fremito would be equally at home with spices like turmeric and cumin as roast chicken with rosemary- drink chilled but not too cold or you’ll miss out on all the goodness…
