They have always worked a fully integrated farm with animals (cows, chickens, pigs, sheep and horses), orchards and grains in addition to grapes. They practice crop rotation, and nothing goes to waste. After the war, the farm was broken in two and their village ended up across the border in Austria meaning they had to give up their parcel in Hungary. Parents Anneliese and Werner proudly reclaimed this after the fall of communism, which worked out very well when it became clear that not just one, but all of their three sons would stick around to carry on the family business! Mulatschak (which means Fifteen Down, a card game in Austria) is a skin-contact white, on the light side (5-7 days), using very aromatic varietals, which seem to work really well for an orange wine – the time on the skins tames the aromatics, highlighting the savory, salty qualities, and tends not to pick up too much tannin. Hazy and fuzzy like an apricot, this wine hits you with a delicious salty wave of cantaloupe, apricot and goldenberries. And just 11.5% alcohol!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0014/1538/1050/files/IMG_8173_a8952758-6436-4b9a-9993-891a48216c07.jpg?v=1706745963
2022-ovum-pink-salt
2022 Ovum ‘PNK Salt’

Region: Columbia Gorge < I then pressed off the wine into old French Oak barrels, where the wine undertook 13 months of aging before being bottled without fining or filtration. We were all set to make another version of our lovely 2019 Chardonnay, but fate, and our press, had other plans. We loaded the whole clusters into the press, and...that was it. The electronics in the press controller decided they had had enough, stopped working, nothing...A quick call to our dealer's service department revealed no spare controller in stock, and it would be 7-10 days to have it shipped over from France. Wonderful. Necessity being the mother of invention, I meanwhile rigged up a switch on the motor, bypassed the control board altogether, and managed to be able to dump out the grapes into bins (since the control board ran all of the pressure switches, I couldn't figure a way to actually press the grapes). Not having many options, we decided to skin ferment these lovely grapes in open-tops...Ten days later, the new board arrived, I installed it, and we were able to finally press the Chardonnay. Long story short, the Chardonnay turned out fabulous, retaining its “chard-ness” while cloaked in a textural structure. Nice acidity, some light tannins, rich, yet refreshing, in the mouth. I like it better than the straight version we had made in 2019. A decision made and a new way forward! We bottled 78 cases after aging the wine for a year in tanks. Obviously, no filtration. We then decided to let the wine mature a bit before release. That, too, turned out to be a good decision. The wine is drinking really nicely now."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0014/1538/1050/files/2020LaClarineFarmSkinFermentedChardonnay.jpg?v=1717714070
2023-divergent-vine-chenin-blanc
2023 Divergent Vine Chenin Blanc

Region: Clarksburg < California
Grape: Chenin Blanc
Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic, zero-input farming; sandy loam soils; fermented and aged in 100% stainless steel barrels with extended lees aging; bottled unfined and unfiltered, with 15ppm added S02; 11.5% ABV; 75 cases

Winemaker: Aaron Bryan

Tiny estate run by husband/wife team who relocated from SF to the Sierra Foothill boons to make natural wine

Bright, fresh and crisp Chenin that starts prim and proper, and ends with a wild French kiss

Chamomile, lemon verbena, wool, and golden apple lead into the super zippy finish

More about Divergent/Conduit:

Aaron has a nontraditional winemaking background. Before prohibition, the city was the center of the California wine industry, producing highly regarded wines from varieties like Palomino, Mission, Garnacha Tintorera and Zinfandel planted on sandy soils. A few of these own-rooted, dry-farmed, vineyards endure, largely due to the stewardship of the Galleano family. With a few collaborators, Raj Parr started exploring, then rehabilitating, some of the most interesting plots of these vines in 2019. The vineyards are relics, sandwiched between warehouses, corporate headquarters, neighborhoods and highways around Los Angeles County. The vines are almost all over 100-years-old, and none of the vineyards have ever been treated with pesticides, fungicides, or even sulfur or copper. From these marvels of endurance and survival, Raj makes low-intervention wines in a small cellar near Boyle Heights, working with minimal additives and neutral vessels. I grew up in the Netherlands and worked for many years in the restaurant business as a sommelier. In March 2017, I decided to follow my dream of making my own wine, so I moved to the Touraine region in the Loire with my (at that time) little Vizsla dog Boaz. That summer I started my winemaking studies in Amboise. I made a small quantity of wine in 2016 and 2017, but after finishing my studies I started a négoce and I found a troglodyte cave in Noizay to make the wine. The search for organic grapes is not easy these days due to climate change, the increasing threat and damage of spring frosts, and various diseases that attack the vines. But thanks to great winemakers who sold me some of their beautiful grapes, I made 6 wines in 2018! All the grapes are (hand) harvested by myself and I treat them as if they came from my own vineyard.

My other dream became reality in 2021. Finding my own vineyard paradise! Together with my partner Edouard we own 4 hectares of vineyards in Jujurieux in the Bugey region. All the Sonshine wines are now produced in our new place in the Bugey. They are ‘natural’, which means that the grapes are organically or biodynamically grown. The wines live their life and it’s my job to guide them in the right direction. In the cellar there are no interventions. The wine is made with indigenous yeast and without additives, apart from a very little dose of sulphur before bottling- if the wine requires it- to keep it stable when it travels the world.

Region: Willamette Valley < Oregon

Grapes: 33% Riesling, 26% Muller Thurgau, 24% Gewürztraminer, 17% Pinot Gris

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; 3 weeks on the skins, full malolactic fermentation, punched down twice/day & pumpovers on Reisling, racked and pressed in neutral oak barrels; unfiltered; minimal sulfur added at bottling; 12% ABV

Woman winemaker - Brianne Day!

Fresh and dry with cheery citrus notes

Punchy, zippy aromatics orange marmalade/apricot jam fizz

Delicious now but the rare orange wine that's worthy of aging a few years

More about Brianne Day & Day Wines:

In case you missed that wine or her story, here’s a refresher: in 2006, recently divorced and alone in the world, having been cut off from her family after abandoning the Jehovah’s Witness religion with which she was raised, the spunky blonde with a trademark pixie cut sold everything she owned and began traveling through wine regions all over the world. Over 8 years she visited 80 different regions, working at wineries in Burgundy, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, before re-establishing her home base in Oregon and picking up a “winemaking habit”, as she describes it. To support this habit, she waited tables at Little Bird in Portland, where she met a wealthy couple who eventually ended up funding her fledgling wine business. Now she’s making 2500 cases of wine per year, working only with small family growers working organically or biodynamically. She’s also paying her good luck forward – her 14,000-square-foot winery in the Dundee Hills was designed to be sort of a commune, where small-scale producers working naturally can rent facilities for their own wine labels.

Region: Lodi < California

Grape: Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming (uncertified); Whole cluster fruit, carbonic fermentation for 10 days. This mission, since 2017, has been carried forward by Marta Ribera and the family of the winery Vinessens, who consequently present us with a portfolio of wines crafted with minimal intervention and the utmost authenticity. With a history in the region that spans generations, they ultimately feel that the wines reflect themselves as well. They work only with native grapes for this reason, farm organically, and are hands off in the cellar. No new wood is allowed, and only minimal sulfur, if any, added at bottling. The elevation is high here, and the soil is predominately marl, combined with some tuff. Marl, the typical clay-based Piemonte soil type, adds acid to resulting wines, and the tuff, which is of volcanic origin, adds a smokey quality. While the Cellario’s vineyard holdings include esteemed Piemonte sites, they choose to adopt a philosophy they describe as “wine of the people”.
