Winemaker: Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig

Shaunt Oungoulian and Diego Roig are one of the OG natty California winemaking duo, making Les Lunes and Populis wines for nearly a decade.  They farm and manage over 8 acres of vineyards in Napa and Sonoma themselves, in order to ensure 100% organic, zero-input fruit. And their production facility is literally the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house in Orinda, just east of Berkeley, which allows them to produce wine without the interference of other wineries’ yeasts or influences. As opposed to the classic profiles of their Les Lunes estates wines, their cosmos series is meant to be lighter and more quaffable.  The Astral Blend is a kitchen sink wine, made up of 7 different red and white grapes, with the idea being to "break through people’s conception of white/red/orange and make a wine that defies classification".

Their thinking goes like this: "The Astral Plane is the metaphysical boundary that separates the earth from the heavens. One must shed the norms and accepted traditions in order to free one’s mind to break through this plane into the heavens. The combination of rosé, white, and red wines creates a category-less wine that subverts definition. Les Lunes Wine has always focused on vineyards and farming. The wines are structured, elegant and age-able. Astral Blend demonstrates a more playful side of our in-house farmed vineyards. Through shorter macerations and aging the wine showcases the incredible fruit potential created by their thoughtful organic farming."
We're so down with this, and with the lovely, ethereal Astral Blend, which falls somewhere between a deep pink rosé and a fresh, chillable red.  Juicy with a candied red and purple fruit character, it tastes like ripe berries plucked from the forest, with a little earth still clinging to them.  With perky acidity and barely-there tannins, it might be the most perfect picnic red.
