Third-gen winemaker Bernard Landron initially began his career
alongside brother Jo in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine area, in the Pays Nantais, on the western edge of the Loire Valley.  Anyone who knows Muscadet wine knows Jo Landron, THE guru of Muscadet, but the estate of his brother Bernard (and now son Benoit) hasn't been on our radar.  So we were thrilled to discover the light, fresh, organic -- and super affordable -- wines of Domaine Landron Chartier.

Organic since 2009 when Bernard’s son Benoît returned from University after studying viticulture and oenology and began the conversion process, they now farm around 25 hectares of Melon de Bourgogne, Folle Blanche, Pinot Gris, Gamay and Cabernet Franc.  This is Muscadet country, so obviously the Atlantic climate is excellent for the salty, high-acid white grapes grown here, but it turns out that the volcanic soils, moderate climate and ocean winds are a winning combo for Gamay, producing bright, minerally Gamay that retains its freshness -- whereas farther North in the Beaujolais zone, global warming is making it harder and harder to achieve the platonic ideal of Gamay (low ABV, high acid, balanced, fresh fruit).

Juicy, bright and easy-drinking, the Esprit Détente is French glou glou at its finest. But it isn't one-dimensional -- and it isn't plush + fruity Beaujolais Gamay.   There's structure, texture, backbone, rocky minerality, and that slightly vegetal Loire character that we love.  With fresh, crunchy red fruit and zingy acid, this is the bottle that will take you through the lingering warm days straight into fall, pairing perfectly with everything from park picnics to football to the first cozy autumn feast.  Stock up now, because while the price is low, so are the quantities, so it won't last long.
