2018 Domaine des Huards Cour-Cheverny Romo

2018 Domaine des Huards Cour-Cheverny Romo

Region: Cour-Cheverny < Loire Valley < France

Grape: Romorantin

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Certified biodynamic farming; sandy soils; stainless steel fermentation and raised in tank on its fine lees; bottled unfined with <20ppm added So2; 13% ABV

Winemaker: Alexandre Gendrier

Domaine des Huards has been in the Gendrier family since 1846 -- they've got 37ha of vineyards completely surrounded by another 25ha of forest and hayfields, so it was easy for 7th generation Alexandre Gendrier’s father to begin conversion to organic viticulture in 1995 and biodynamic a decade later (now certified in both). Located in the tiny appellation of Cour-Cheverny, the only place in the Loire to grow the rare Romorantin, there is only a mere 130+ acres of it under vine (Cheverny, the overlapping sister appellation, is reserved for the other Loire varieties).  Legend has it that King François introduced Romorantin to Touraine in 1519 by ordering 80,000 vines to be taken from its home in Burgundy and planted near the village of
Romorantin, where his mother often stayed. Supposedly François wanted to build a chateau there, which turned out to be the famous, whimsically turreted Chambord.

The Gendrier family works only with Romorantin, and this Romo bottling is from their younger vines (35 years old).  It smells beautiful, like a high-toned Riesling, but it tastes like racy Chenin, with a dense texture, razor sharp acidity, and layers of flavors: apricots, apples and citrus, with a long, minerally finish. A great Loire Sauvignon Blanc alternative, and so good for food!
