2018 Dewey’s Barsotti Vineyard Vermentino

Region: El Dorado County > California

Grapes: Vermentino

2600 foot elevation. Foot trod before pressing, juice settled for one

barrels. Aged 15 months; bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal
added So2; 13% ABV; 150 cases

Winemaker: Charlie Miller

Dewey’s is a relatively new project from husband and wife Charlie
Miller and Emma Rosenbush. Charlie was formerly the assistant
winemaker at Cruse Wine Co (swoon, we love these wines!) and
originally made their Vermentino in Cruse’s cellar, using the old oak
barrels that winemaker Michael Cruse had leftover. Despite the fact
that Charlie always assumed he would ferment his white wine in
stainless steel, he ended up loving the results. And his wife, Emma,
partner and GM at Cala in San Francisco, agreed. They pride themselves
on letting Dewey’s wines (named after their dog) be themselves. The
2018 is fermented in a mix of stainless steel and neutral barrel and
is both zesty and light, and creamy at the same time. Most old world
vermentino is grown near the ocean, but the Barsotti vineyard is in
the Sierra Foothills at around 2600 feet, so the grapes have high
acidity already built in -- the Barsotti Vineyard is legendary for
this high elevation, pink granite soils, and immaculate farming by the
Mansfield family.  The oak softens the wine just a touch to reach
another of the couple’s goals – make unpretentious and eminently
drinkable wine. Their vermentino is exactly that – but more than just
a park wine, this pretty white is complex and brainy.  Somehow she is
both delicate and dense, rich and light, at the same time.  Stoney,
salty, green almond and lime, crack this juicy white with some white
fish or marinated olives or pea soup and crème fraiche.  A super
versatile and delicious wine!
