2019 Old World Winery Pinot Noir “Bloom”

2019 Old World Winery Pinot Noir “Bloom”

Region: Russian River < Sonoma > California

Grapes: Pinot Noir

Vineyard/Cellar Stats: Organic farming; soils are powdery loam with sedimentary rock; grapes were stomped with 100% whole cluster and allowed to soak for 5 days of maceration on both skins and stems.  Wild Fermentation occurs naturally.  Then 9 months in neutral barrels, sur lie the entire time - never racked, then bottled unfined/unfiltered, with 20 ppm added SO2, 10.5% ABV; 100 cases

Winemakers: Darek Trowbridge

Darek is one of the OG Cali natural winemakers, having made low-intervention wine in Sonoma for 20 years, way before it was a thing.  In fact, he named his winery ‘Old World’, because he’s all about a return to the old world methods of his grandfather Lino Martinelli (of Martinelli wine/cider fame), who started making wine in the early 1900s, with no technology or chemicals.  Derek adds nothing to the wine except a minimal amount of protective sulfur before bottling. He directly farms or manages the farming for all the vineyards he works with and uses just his feet to stomp the grapes. He doesn’t use temperature controls in the cellar, and feels strongly that using only the native yeast from the vineyard is the best way to express the natural beauty in that wine.

Bloom is Darek's chillable red series, made from different grapes each year.  Last year was this epic Wild-farmed Cab -- 2019 brings a Pinot Noir from the Nurmi Vineyard, set on the coastal fringe of the Russian River Valley Appellation.  The vineyard is set on the northern side of the steep hill, high off the valley floor and positioned to enjoy the gentle morning sun -- not the raisin-making hot afternoon sun. Rows of vines are terraced, making the steep hillside easier to work.  All of these things combine to create a completely different Pinot Noir experience than you normally get from the Russian River Valley.  Instead of plush, fleshy, rich and jammy, you get lean, brambly, herbal and earthy.  It tastes faintly wild, but never strays far from the classic Pinot notes of cherry (more tart than dark), red fruit and spice. We're super into this wine, and will be sipping it, slightly chilled, until cold weather sets in.
