On the right bank of the Vienne River, just outside of Chinon, Frédéric Sigonneau has reinvigorated his family vineyard. After studying viticulture in Spain, he returned home to the Loire Valley in 2004 and in 2007 founded Domaine de L'R on his family's 8 hectare estate. There, 45-60 year-old Cab Franc vines grow on the soils that historically were the riverbeds of the Vienne. Frédéric is hardcore about farming the vineyard and working in the cellar as naturally as possible -- he even makes a no So2 Cab Franc cuvee whose label sports only an X-ed out skull and crossbones symbol significafying NO POISON.  This one sees a tiny amount of added So2 only at bottling, and is one of the purest expressions of Chinon CF we’ve had recently. Crunchy but not too green, bright acid but enough fruit to sink your teeth into, dark red and black fruits that demand food. Classic, and clean. Easy-drinking enough to accompany you on a picnic. If not on the Loire outside of château, at least in a meadow. Or the nearest city park will do. There will be baguettes, rillettes, rillons, pâte, chèvre. You get the idea. If you can't wait for warm weather and spring’s first lazy picnic day to try this one, we strongly encourage pairing with weeknight dinner.
